A Time To Stitch 2 - Right Angle Weave and St Petersburg Stitches

Hi Y'all,

Welcome to A Time To Stitch 2 featuring Right Angle Weave and St. Petersburg stitches.  Hosted by Christine Altmiller of One Kiss Creations and me Therese Frank.

The rules for this challenge are pretty simple.  All we asked is to make something using these stitches, either one or both of the stitches.  If it was the first time for someone to stitch these stitches, then all we asked is that you try and if you only get an inch or two, then blog about the experience you had trying the stitch.

First up for me is Right Angle Weave (RAW).  RAW was a stitch that used to give me fits.  It took me a long time before the light turned on for this stitch.  I can not tell you how many times I would start this stitch, then get all confused on the needle path and through it across the room.  I was determine to learn this stitch, so I did not give up.  It finally clicked and everything fell into place and now I am making my own RAW designs such as this one...

I used 4 mm brown glass pearls, 4 mm topaz bicone crystals, 4 mm topaz roundels crystals, size 11 copper seed beads and 8x6 mm Tiger's eye briolettes. The clasp is a PM bronze clay toggle by Lesley Watts.

Since I used all 4 mm size beads my piece has a wavy effect that makes it look like ruffled lace.  I rather like the effect.

This piece is my first Cubic Right Angle Weave (CRAW) piece.  Some of you may remember this necklace form Lisa Lodge's Bead Table Blog Hop earlier this month.  CRAW was another one that I just could not grasp until I watched a video that KJ of KJ's Beadacious Beads sent to me after I commented on how I just could not wrap my brain around CRAW, thank you KJ.

Second up St. Petersburg stitch.  This stitch to me was a simple one I got this stitch right off when I first tried it a couple of years ago.  I made a simple little bracelet, that I did not take a picture of, and gave it to a little girl as a gift.  For this challenge I made a neck strap for an bead embroidered piece I did a few years ago and just could not make up my mind if I wanted to make a neck strap for it or make it into a pin.

I did a double St Petersburg neck strap using turquoise size 11 seed beads, black size 8 seed beads, and red size 6 seed beads.  The clasp is a silver tone base metal toggle clasp.

The cabochon in this pieces is Chrysocolla from Arizona.

I hope you have enjoyed viewing what I made for this round of A Time To Stitch challenge.  Now please come and join me in visiting all of the other participates.

Shannon Hicks was a participate, but she had to drop out of the challenge for reasons beyond her control. Please click on her name and go visit her blog anyway; read her past blog post and see all the beautiful pieces she has created.

  1. They all turned out nice Therese. I particularly like your RAW necklace; I absolutely adore complex color schemes, but the simple one's just call my name because hey are so wearable and classic. And speaking of complex color schemes, there are few that I like better than those involving turquoise and red.

Thank you for the shout out.

  2. Your necklaces are beautiful, Therese! I felt the same way about RAW, but once you get the hang of it the things you can do with it are amazing! I love the bead embroidered pendant and the neck strap is perfect with it. Thanks for hosting the hop. It's really fun to concentrate on 2 stitches and see what can be done with them.

  5. Therese, Thanks for Everything, including taking me on this fun ride with you. I am truly enjoying the journey :-D
Your pieces are absolutely wonderful! The necklace with the tiger's eye looks like it drapes beautifully and I am completely drawn in to the brown/topaz/copper tones. Beautiful! The CRAW looks intricate and sturdy and I love the look of it. Maybe if I fully get comfortable with RAW.....
Your St. Petersburg piece is Gorgeous!!! That combo of turq and red is so stunning and the Chrysocolla and how you embellished it is incredibly beautiful. St. Pete's finished that piece off perfectly.

  17. Each piece is awesome on its own, and would be the perfect complement for Fall wardrobes! I adore CRAW, and love how you used it in your second piece, but my favorite has to be the last one; that's one of the prettiest focals I've ever seen and the St. Petersburg chain is perfect for it!

  18. Wow Therese! So all the pieces are so intricate and beautiful. I love the colors and the big drop beads you used in the first RAW necklace. And the cab work you did around that chrysocolla is amazing. Your work has truly advanced just in the short time I have known you and been following your blog ;)

  20. Oh my goodness Therese - what can I say that hasn't already been said? I love your work and I continue to be in awe of what you accomplish. These are works of art truly beautiful and I too love how the RAW starts to wave. The last piece is jaw dropping and I can't stop looking at it. Thank you for being such an inspiring bead weaver and for hosting these challenges with Christine.

  21. Holy cow, girl, these are awesome! The first necklace is so lush with the beautiful browns, but that St. Petersburg necklace would stop someone dead in their tracks, where they'd have to drop down to pick up the jaw they just dropped. Wow, wow, wow!

  22. Therese, I love both pieces! The first piece is totally ruffley and gorgeous. I really love (no wait... love, love, LOVE) the bead embroidered piece! It's got an energy to it that just resonates with me. Simply gorgeous my friend!

Great hop, I'm off to check out a few more artisans while I'm taking a break from "work."

  25. Therese, first and foremost: thank you and Christine for hosting this fabulous challenge, it was a wonderful experience for me and I learned a lot.
I love all your pieces: those delicate ruffles on the first one, the subdued autumn colours on the second and the lovely western feel of the last necklace!

  26. O my, your work is lovely -- so intricate, and such lush, elegant colours. You must be incredibly patient! I think my favourite is the one with the Cubic Right Angle Weave.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can't believe RAW ever gave you a hard time looking at that stunning tiger eye necklace! I also love the St. Petersburg chain you created for that lovely embroidered piece. I really enjoyed learning the St. Petersburg chain and found it to be much easier to create than it looks. I can't wait for your next challenge ... I'll be a seed bead weaving pro thanks to you and Christine! =)

  28. Hi, Therese! As always, your pieces are very beautiful! Thank you for this opportunity to join the club of beadweavers, I enjoyed it very much and I'll keep learning :-)

  29. Therese, Your pieces are magnificent! I love the last one the best because of the colors, however, the RAW is fascinating. Especially how it ripples like lace.

Thank you for hosting the Hop. I have had a lot of fun and enjoyed the challenge of learning the St. Petersburg stitch. I think now I want to try the cubic RAW. I can't wait for the next hop!
